π How Does a Hosted PBX Work?
A Hosted PBX (Private Branch Exchange) is a cloud-based business phone system that allows your company to make and receive calls over an internet connection without requiring a traditional telephone system installed at your office.
How Does It Work?
Just as your computer connects to the internet through a router, an IP phone connects to the same network using a standard Ethernet cable.
Once the phone is connected, powered on, and properly configured with your UsVox service, it can function as a complete business telephone.
With a UsVox Hosted PBX, you can:
- Make and receive telephone calls.
- Transfer calls between extensions.
- Place calls on hold.
- Forward calls to another extension or number.
- Access voicemail.
- Make internal calls between company locations.
- Use additional business phone features supported by your service.

Your Business Phone, Anywhere
One of the greatest advantages of a Hosted PBX is its flexibility.
Because your phone system operates through the internet, compatible IP phones can be used at different locations without requiring a traditional telephone line.
For example, an employee can use their business extension at the office, at home, or while traveling, provided a reliable internet connection is available.
This allows businesses with multiple offices and remote employees to operate under one unified phone system.
Important: Network restrictions, phone configuration, and emergency calling requirements may vary by location.

How Much Internet Bandwidth Does a Hosted PBX Use?
Unlike traditional telephone systems, a Hosted PBX uses your internet connection to transmit voice communications.
Bandwidth consumption depends on the audio codec, the number of simultaneous calls, and network conditions.
For planning purposes, a common G.711 voice call requires approximately 80β100 Kbps in each direction, including typical network overhead.
Bandwidth Examples
Using an estimated 100 Kbps per simultaneous call:
| Simultaneous Calls | Upload Bandwidth | Download Bandwidth |
|---|---|---|
| 1 call | 100 Kbps | 100 Kbps |
| 2 calls | 200 Kbps | 200 Kbps |
| 5 calls | 500 Kbps | 500 Kbps |
| 10 calls | 1 Mbps | 1 Mbps |
| 20 calls | 2 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
These figures are estimates for voice traffic and may vary depending on your network and service configuration.
How to Calculate Your Bandwidth Requirements
To estimate your company's voice bandwidth requirements, multiply the maximum number of simultaneous calls by approximately 100 Kbps.
Example:
10 simultaneous calls Γ 100 Kbps = 1,000 Kbps (1 Mbps) of upload and download bandwidth.
For the best calling experience, your internet connection should have additional available bandwidth for normal business activities.
What About Internal Calls and Voicemail?
Internal extension calls and voicemail access may also consume network bandwidth.
The amount depends on how calls are routed through the Hosted PBX platform.
Even when no calls are active, IP phones exchange small amounts of signaling and registration traffic with the phone system.
Internet Connection Quality Matters
A reliable Hosted PBX requires more than sufficient internet speed.
The quality of your calls also depends on:
- Latency: Delays in voice transmission.
- Jitter: Variations in the arrival time of voice packets.
- Packet Loss: Missing voice data that may cause distorted or interrupted audio.
- Network Congestion: Heavy internet usage that can affect call quality.
A properly configured network with Quality of Service (QoS) can help prioritize voice traffic.
