π‘ How Hosted Internet PBX Works
Created by the UsVox Support Team
A Hosted Internet PBX works much like your desktop PC when it connects to the internet β but instead of accessing websites, your device uses internet connectivity to power your business phone system.
π₯οΈ The Basics: Your Phone Is Like a Mini-Computer
An IP phone (Internet Protocol phone) works just like a computer:
It connects to your router or modem using a standard network cable
Once plugged in and powered on, the phone automatically registers with the UsVox system over the internet
As long as the internet connection is active, the phone can:
- Make and receive calls
- Transfer and forward calls
- Check voicemail
- Call internal extensions
- Use business features like Do Not Disturb, Hold, or Call History
π Work from Anywhere
Because your IP phone connects over the internet, it is not bound to a physical location.
You can take your phone anywhere in the world β home, satellite office, hotel, or international location β and it will still function like itβs at your main office, as long as it has a stable internet connection.
π Bandwidth Usage: What to Expect
Hosted PBX service uses very little bandwidth unless you are on an active external call.
β Typical Bandwidth Usage:
- One external call: ~90 kbps
- Two simultaneous calls: ~180 kbps
- Bandwidth use decreases as calls end.
π‘ Internal calls and voicemail access also use minimal bandwidth but do require a stable connection.
βοΈ Network Settings Matter
To ensure high-quality voice service, we recommend:
- Disabling SIP ALG on your router or firewall
- Enabling QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize VoIP traffic
- Using updated network equipment and keeping firmware up to date
- Avoiding the use of unmanaged switches or poor cabling
