πŸ“ž Understanding Phone Lines and Extensions

What Are Phone Lines?

In the UsVox system, Phone Lines are also known as Account Numbers. Each phone line represents a unique number that can be used to:

  • Connect to an Extension (assigned to a user’s desk phone or softphone)
  • Ring a Hunt Group (calls delivered to multiple extensions)
  • Send calls to Queues (for organized call handling)
  • Connect to an IVR / Auto Attendant (for automated call routing)

πŸ”— How Phone Lines and Extensions Work Together

  • An Extension is an internal short number (e.g. 101, 102, 200) that users dial inside the organization.
  • A Phone Line (Account Number) is the actual SIP account registered on a device (desk phone, softphone, app). When you assign a Phone Line to an Extension:
    • Calls to that extension will ring the linked device.
    • Voicemail and personal settings follow the extension.

βœ… Ways to Use Phone Lines

You can use your Phone Lines in three main ways:

1️⃣ Assign to a User Extension

  • Example: Phone Line 0207771234 β†’ Extension 101 β†’ User β€œJohn Smith”

2️⃣ Point Directly to a Hunt Group

  • Example: Phone Line 1305550123β†’ Hunt Group β€œSales Department” β†’ Rings multiple sales extensions at once.

3️⃣ Route to a Queue or IVR

  • Example: Phone Line 1305550123β†’ Main Company IVR β†’ Caller selects options to reach different departments.
